The LaGuardia Performing Arts Center’s Rough Draft Festival will present a workshop production of Mother of Pearl, a new work of multimedia theatre that explores the definitions of family and forgiveness in the context of the House Music scene. Inspired by the late 1980s House Music scene in New York City, Mother of Pearl, uses music, dialogue, movement and projections to bridge the gap between the past and the present. The play explores how tragedy can divide even the most close-knit communities, and it questions the stability of youthful pacts of solidarity, unity, and inclusion. The House Music scene is synonymous with good vibes and positivity but can the love and joy which was once cultivated on the dance floor of the past heal the resentment and animosity of today?
In the late 1980s, a tribe of kindred spirits was sanctified by sweat and soul on the dance floor of a weekly House Music party until a horrific tragedy turned jubilation into sorrow and friends into foes. Thirty years later the surviving members convene in the abandoned NYC loft where many of their most cherished memories and worst nightmares were born.
