Black River is an afro-surreal family adventure that follows ten-year-old Jonas as he struggles to face the impending loss of his father, Thomas, a singer-songwriter in home hospice after a brief battle with cancer. Encouraged by his mother, Angela, to spend time with Thomas before he passes, Jonas instead retreats into his room, clinging to the comfort of his oversized teddy bear, John Candy. But when Thomas dies, reality bends—Jonas’s bedroom is suddenly flooded by a raging river, and his home breaks away, launching him and John Candy on a mythical canoe journey down Wisconsin’s Black River. As he navigates a dreamlike world shaped by memory and grief, Jonas encounters strange and wondrous beings, including BIG STEVE, a colossal, smooth-voiced catfish who swallows him whole, sending him adrift through the cosmos. In this surreal voyage of love and loss, Black River tenderly explores the fears of a child confronting death and the power of imagination in the search for closure.
